The ‘two rivers’ of the name referred to the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers and the land was known as ‘Al-Jazirah’ the island by the Arabs referencing what Egyptologist J. The Cradle of Civilization Unlike the more unified civilizations of Egypt or Greece , Mesopotamia was a collection of varied cultures whose only real bonds were their script , their gods, and their attitude toward women.

They exist today in a damaged state with so many of the sculptures now missing, that visitors to the caves cannot imagine how they looked in the past. Many of the sculptures from the caves are now in museums around the world. However, though the sculptures may be preserved and displayed, visitors to museums cannot understand them in their original historical, spatial, and religious contexts. For these reasons the Center for the Art of East Asia in the Department of Art History at the University of Chicago initiated the Tianlongshan Caves Project in to pursue research and digital imaging of the caves and their sculptures.

The Project seeks to record and archive the sculptures and to compile data that can identify the fragments and their places of origin. In carrying this out, the Project aims to foster better understanding of the sculptural art, the history, and the meaning of the Tianlongshan Caves through creation of this website and through an exhibition of the results of the Project based on digital information.

Mark published on 28 April Babylon is the most famous city from ancient Mesopotamia whose ruins lie in modern-day Iraq 59 miles 94 kilometres southwest of Baghdad. The city owes its fame or infamy to the many references the Bible makes to it; all of which are unfavourable. Babylon also appears prominently in the biblical books of Daniel, Jeremiah, and Isaiah, among others, and, most notably, The Book of Revelation.

It was these biblical references which sparked interest in Mesopotamian archaeology and the expedition by the German archaeologist Robert Koldewey who first excavated the ruins of Babylon in CE.

We used to have t-shirts at the University of Chicago that read: Where the squirrels are cuter than the girls. So, other than the bad hygiene and shallow dating pool, relationships were usually a lot more intellectual and filled with late-night scrabble than the typical college relationship.

His Life and Work: A Historical and Critical Study This bibliography was itself the result of a great deal of work by Lukes himself, depending upon earlier bibliographies like those contained in Harry Alpert’s Emile Durkheim and His Sociology and the bibliography prepared by Armand Cuvillier for the Durkheim centenary issue of the Revista mexicana de sociologia These were updated with the assistance of W.

As in the Peregrine edition, I have adopted the Lukes enumeration scheme, extending it to refer to specific English translations as well as to edited volumes in which these translations are contained. Translations As Lukes has warned us, the quality of the translations of Durkheim’s works varies enormously from the very poor to the excellent.

Since the first edition of Lukes’ book, the number of translations by different hands has increased greatly and this has meant that at least certain poor translations such as b and b have been superseded by those of better quality. Following Lukes, only where translations of complete items have been made have they been allocated a dating-enumeration. The listing of English translations has been extended by W. Bulletin d’information, 2, , pp. Future Developments These bibliographical references have all been stored electronically, using a bibliographic database management tool called EndNote Plus.

I can’t speak for UChicago, but there’s not as many relationships at Brown as you might expect, and there’s a large hookup culture because everyone is too busy with schoolwork to really bother with the exhausting prospect of dating.

History[ edit ] Some of the earliest origins of minestrone soup pre-date the expansion of the Latin tribes of Rome into what became the Roman Kingdom later Roman Republic and Empire , when the local diet was “vegetarian by necessity” and consisted mostly of vegetables, such as onions , lentils , cabbage , garlic , broad beans , mushrooms , carrots , asparagus , and turnips. Spelt flour was also removed from soups, as bread had been introduced into the Roman diet by the Greeks, and pulte became a meal largely for the poor.

Apicius updates the pultes and pulticulae with fancy trimmings such as cooked brains and wine. In other words, one did not gather the ingredients of minestrone with the intention of making minestrone. The ingredients were pooled from ingredients for other dishes, often side dishes or contorni plus whatever was left over, rather like the pulte. One argues that in the 17th and 18th centuries minestrone emerged as a soup using exclusively fresh vegetables and was made for its own sake meaning it no longer relied on left-overs , while the other school of thought argues that the dish had always been prepared exclusively with fresh vegetables for its own sake since the pre-Roman pulte, but the name minestrone lost its meaning of being made with left-overs.

It is from Italian minestrone, the augmentative form of minestra, “soup,” or more literally, “that which is served,” from minestrare, “to serve” [6] [7] and cognate with “administer” as in “to administer a remedy. Minestrone ranges from a thick and dense texture with very boiled-down vegetables, to a more brothy soup with large quantities of diced and lightly cooked vegetables ; it may also include meats. In modern Italian there are three words corresponding to the English word ‘soup’: Regional variations[ edit ] Minestrone alla Genovese is a variant typical of Liguria , which contains greater use of herbs, including pesto.
